Taizé Community
A hillside village in France where 100,000 young people come each year to pray and sing simple songs together.
Biblical significance
Brother Roger arrived in 1940 and sheltered refugees, including Jews, during the occupation. The community he founded is ecumenical by design, with Catholic and Protestant brothers under one rule. The sung prayer — short repeated phrases in many languages — spread worldwide. Three services a day fill the Church of Reconciliation, where the congregation sits on the floor in near darkness.
