Megiddo
A hill made of 26 towns built on top of each other, looking over the valley the Bible calls Armageddon.
Biblical significance
Megiddo guarded the pass where the coastal highway met the Jezreel Valley, and whoever held it held the road between Egypt and Mesopotamia. The tell preserves Canaanite gates, Solomonic stables, a Bronze Age temple and a remarkable water tunnel cut to a hidden spring. Its Hebrew name, Har Megiddo, became Armageddon in Revelation — the last battlefield of the imagination.

Spring and autumn; the site has little shade.
Visitor notes
A UNESCO World Heritage site off Route 65, about 35 minutes from Haifa or Nazareth. Allow two hours, including the 183-step water system.
