Biblical significance
Carmel is a wooded limestone ridge running to the Mediterranean, green where Israel is dry — which is why the drought in Elijah's contest bites so hard in the telling. At Muhraqa, near the summit, a Carmelite monastery marks the traditional site of the altar and offers one of the great views in the country, across the Jezreel Valley to Gilboa and Tabor.
