Mount Nebo in Jordan

Madaba, Jordan

Mount Nebo

The hill where Moses looked out over the Promised Land he was never allowed to enter.

Biblical significance

4/5 · Major biblical site

Deuteronomy places Moses' death and unmarked grave here. On a clear day the view runs across the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea, Jericho and the towers of Jerusalem. A Byzantine memorial church built by monks in the fourth century preserves an extraordinary sixth-century mosaic floor of hunters, herdsmen and wildlife. The bronze Serpentine Cross on the summit sculpts the brazen serpent and the cross into one form.
