Patmos
The island of exile where John received the Revelation — the cave is still there, and so is the crack in the rock.
Biblical significance
John was banished to this Dodecanese island around AD 95. The Cave of the Apocalypse, halfway up the hill between the port and the hilltop town, is now enclosed in a chapel; a threefold fissure in the rock is shown as the source of the voice. Above it, the fortified Monastery of St John the Theologian, founded in 1088, dominates the island and holds a major manuscript library.

May-June or September; ferries thin out in winter.
