Assisi, Italy
Basilica of St Francis
Giotto's frescoes over the tomb of the man who preached to birds and rebuilt the church by leaving it everything.
Biblical significance
Francis died in 1226 and was canonised two years later; construction began immediately on a double basilica into the hillside. The Upper Church holds the fresco cycle of his life traditionally attributed to Giotto, which broke medieval convention by giving figures weight and space. The 1997 earthquake collapsed part of the vault and killed four people; restoration reassembled the fragments over a decade.
