Basilica of St Francis in Italy

Assisi, Italy

Basilica of St Francis

The home town of Saint Francis, who loved animals and gave away everything. His tomb is under a church full of famous paintings.

Biblical significance

3/5 · Well attested

Francis died in 1226 and was canonised two years later; construction began immediately on a double basilica into the hillside. The Upper Church holds the fresco cycle of his life traditionally attributed to Giotto, which broke medieval convention by giving figures weight and space. The 1997 earthquake collapsed part of the vault and killed four people; restoration reassembled the fragments over a decade.
