Nidaros Cathedral
Built over the grave of St Olav, the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world and the end of the Norwegian pilgrim road.
Biblical significance
Construction began around 1070 above Olav's burial place and continued in Romanesque and then Gothic through the fourteenth century. The west front carries a rank of soapstone saints and kings, most of them twentieth-century recarvings after the originals were lost. Norwegian monarchs are still consecrated here. The Olav vigil in late July fills the nave.
